I’m just curious… How many of our followers consider themselves antitheist?

In regards to my post

Apparently my post has been causing some stir. Firstly , I know how evolution works. Secondly, the reason for the post was to point out the stupidity that is intelligent design. Given that I.D. dictates the spontaneous generation of creatures as they are in their current form, I was simply trying to illustrate the ridiculousness of the notion. Perhaps the example given was not a proper demonstration, and if this is the case, I apologize for it.

On Marcus Aurelius

By the by, it doesn’t seem that Marcus Aurelius ever said/wrote the quote attributed to him. A misattribution is made a bit more likely, given how religious he seemed to be, and that he had a similar quote with a different meaning. — xovvo

I did some research and found this…

Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.

No printed sources exist for this prior to 2010, and this seems to have been an attribution which arose on the internet, as indicated by web searches and rationales provided at ”Marcus Aurelius and source checking” at Three Shouts on a Hilltop (14 June 2011)

This quote may be a paraphrase of “Since it is possible that thou mayest depart from life this very moment, regulate every act and thought accordingly. But to go away from among men, if there are gods, is not a thing to be afraid of, for the gods will not involve thee in evil; but if indeed they do not exist, or if they have no concern about human affairs, what is it to me to live in a universe devoid of gods or devoid of Providence?” from Meditations, Book II, but the quote in question has a quite different meaning.

Thank you xovvo for letting us know about this.

Edit:

Since I was the one who posted the picture in question, I think its necessary to say that I did think it was a strange attribution, so I looked it up before posting and found that there was debate over the idea.

Examples against the attribution:Three shouts on a hill top blog postandWikiquote

Examples in favour of the attribution: GoodReads and Richard Dawkins.net

However, I decided that it was such a well thought out maxim that I’d post it regardless of who said it.

I have to say something about this because it always bugs me when people do this. The word retarded is not a bad word to use. The word retard means (via Merriam-Webster) to slow up especially by preventing or hindering advance or development. So if anyone gets offended by the use of the word retard or retarded please realize what the word truly means. Not everything has to do with a certain type of individual.
