What Victor meant was that humanity will follow most of the species on Earth and become extinct at some point in the future. Effectively, this does mean that humanity is doomed. However, just because this is so does not mean that we should just let what happens, happens- it’s human nature to help those around us, and this is a good thing.
In the grand scheme of things, in this vast universe, humanity means next to nothing. We are but one species, on one planet, in one solar system, in one galaxy… But to ourselves, our species is of great importance.
Although the Gandhi quote is not one I think perfectly fits my views- I think “vitally” is a matter of perspective, but it’s in our greater benefit that we live on, and help others do the same.

Are you asking me if I live my life without belief? Yeah I think so. The only thing I would say to that is I trust my friends or family, so if they tell me they got drunk last weekend, i wouldn’t go asking for proof.
But relating strictly to religion, yes it is possible.
