Religion doesn’t need to go away. It just needs to stop being considered a valid excuse for vile behavior and taking the rights of others, that’s all.
This is a good point. For all I care, religion can exist and be practiced by anyone who wants to devote themselves to it. But it should never take away accountability for any person’s actions, and it should never be used to influence that which lies outside of the religion itself. Happy coexistence is entirely possible this way.
For the next few days I’m down in London as part of the Debating Matters national finals. If we have any Londoner followers who can be bothered, feel free to drop by the Wellcome Collection near Euston, we’re spending most of our time there. Maybe get a chance to meet some of you =P
And then I’m away abroad for some much needed R&R.
“I like to point out how irrational it is to have any reverence for religion at all. We look at the ancient Greeks with their gods on a mountaintop throwing lightning bolts and say, ‘Those ancient Greeks. They were so silly. So primitive and naive. Not like our religions. We have burning bushes talking to people and guys walking on water. We’re… sophisticated.”—Paul Provenza (via fuckyeahsexyatheists)
SMOKING, DRINKING AND HAVING SEX WONT MAKE YOU SEEM ANY OLDER.
BECOMING AN ATHEIST WONT MAKE YOU SEEM MORE SMART.
ACTING LIKE A DICK WONT MAKE YOU SEEM MORE INTERESTING :)
Sincerly, another average teen.
Wow, you’re a smart one. People only do those things to seem older. Not like those things are actually fun or anything.
The second thing is especially hilarious. People become atheists to seem smart? No, no, no. People become atheists because they are smart - smart enough, at least, to see the futility of religion and how damaging it is, and smart enough to acknowledge that there is no evidence for a god and that it’s very possible that we are alone in the universe.
Acting like a self-righteous fuckface on the internet won’t make you any better than anybody else.
Somebody who can spell.
Add: Check out this girl’s profile. She thinks she’s going to rule the world one day. You’re going to have to be a lot more cunning than that.
Here’s OP’s post, and some wonderful commentary that I didn’t notice before.
I’ve seen a bunch of hypocritical slander by so called “Christians” and “Catholics”. I got to a Catholic school (Disclaimer: I am atheist) where I am TAUGHT in my religion classes every single day that the whole message Jesus Christ and God convey is love. Love is the whole foundation of Christianity. If you follow that message then you are a true Christian. Go read and analyze a Bible, and then come to me with a valid argument as to why you aren’t an ignorant fuck.
Usually when browsing the “Religion” tag I get angry at the world.
I don't want to sound like one of those "OMG THAT WAS OFFENSIVE" people, but I don't think it's ever a good idea to say "if you think that, you can go fucking die." (I'm sorry, not to be a nag, but it didn't come across well at all :-/)
To be honest, I really don’t care.
But I can see where you’re coming from. I’m not going to sit here and pretend that it is in no way offensive, because it was, and you have the right to your opinion.
People that think like that are just the most infuriating to me.
I could get the same content by going to r/atheism, and this way I wouldn’t have “follow for the best atheist posts on tumblr!!!” spamming my dashboard. If anyone else hasn’t done this yet, I invite you to reconsider.
Unfollowed a while ago. I also have that line in my ‘tumblr saviour’ too, because it’s so irritating.
I never followed that blog. It’s so irritating to try to claim you’re the best when all you do is regurgitate pictures and claim them to be your own.
I think I know that there is no god, it makes no sense, but I'm really scared of hell and frankly, religion mortifies me. Please can I have some advice, I'm getting really anxious. At my school they teach different religions, but most people are Catholic Christian, and I expressed my views, and now they don't like me. Please help. Ps sorry for my bad english
Don’t worry about your English, it’s completely fine!
As for the other people at your school, frankly the problem lies with them. Remember, you’re not in the wrong for having an opinion upon the question of the existence of a God. The best thing to do, I think, is just to act normally. Don’t, for example, bring up the topic- but if someone asks you just reply politely.
Just remember, it may not seem like it in school, but you’re not alone in your views. I’m happy to talk to anyone privately on my personal blog, and I’m sure that the others on here, as well as on other atheism blogs are too.
Hope everything goes fine in school, feel free to talk whenever (preferably off of anon, so that it’s private between us).
“To put it bluntly and fairly, anyone today who doubts that the variety of life on this planet was produced by a process of evolution is simply ignorant-inexcusably ignorant, in a world where three out of four people have learned to read and write.”—Daniel Dennett (via fuckyeahsexyatheists)
